On Saturday, 14th June 2025 , the Life Skills Pillar held its very first Community Service Learning (CSL) Challenge Assessment at Emsingi. This milestone event was a vibrant showcase of student-led initiatives aligned with CBC\/CBE goals and marked an exciting beginning for CSL assessments under the Life Skills Pillar.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The assessment was evaluated by a distinguished panel comprising:<\/span><\/p>

Georgina King\u2019ori , Head of the Teacher Education Program (TEP) and former Principal of Moi Educational Centre,<\/span><\/p>

Rita Babiri , Manager at the Academic Affairs Office and Lead of the Life Skills Pillar,<\/span><\/p>

John Gatheru , from the Mentoring Services Office and an active member of the Life Skills Pillar.<\/span><\/p>

Two schools were invited to present their projects:<\/span><\/p>

Olympic Comprehensive School , Kibra<\/span><\/p>

Flying Eagle School , Kasarani<\/span><\/p>

Both schools addressed the theme of Environmental Conservation and Sustainability , demonstrating insightful engagement with the subject matter. Their projects reflected a solid understanding of the environmental issues facing their communities and highlighted how learners can take action through creative, research-driven, and practical approaches.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

In a memorable highlight of the day, learners from Olympic Comprehensive School brought with them a vibrant display of artwork inspired by their CSL initiative. The art portrayed messages of recycling, clean energy, tree planting, and waste management. In a proud and inspiring moment, one student successfully sold a piece of their artwork to Dr. Alfred Kitawi , further underscoring the depth of talent and commitment nurtured through this initiative. The sale served as a powerful indicator of the real-world impact the CSL model is having not just in promoting environmental consciousness, but in encouraging entrepreneurship, self-confidence, and creative expression among learners.<\/span><\/p>

The judges praised both schools for their efforts, innovation, and clarity in linking their projects to the goals of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) and Competency-Based Education (CBE) . The assessment reinforced the importance of empowering young people to become proactive problem-solvers, leaders, and ambassadors for sustainability in their communities.<\/span><\/p>

As the Life Skills Pillar continues to grow, this successful assessment marked an important step toward deepening student engagement and bringing values-based learning to life in meaningful, measurable ways.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
