Building Foundations for Brighter Futures

eMsingi is transforming education in Kenya through digital innovation and community collaboration, empowering students, teachers, and parents to reach their full potential.

Our Story

From a small university project to a nationwide digital education movement

The Macheo Sunrise

At Strathmore University, we launched Macheo (“sunrise” in Swahili), a community outreach program supporting secondary students from Nairobi’s informal settlements like Kibera and Mukuru. Our holistic approach combined tutoring, life skills, and mentorship while engaging teachers and parents.

Expanding Horizons

Macheo grew to support 150 students annually across seven schools in Nairobi’s informal settlements. Our students began achieving what once seemed impossible – earning full university scholarships and breaking cycles of poverty through education.

Taking Flight to Rural Kenya

Inspired by Macheo’s success, we launched Project TAI (“eagle”) in Kitui County, bringing our holistic approach to 10 rural secondary schools. Each year, TAI reached 5,000 students with mentoring, improved teaching methods, and increased parent involvement.

The eMsingi Project

With a decade of proven impact, we launched eMsingi (“foundation”) to scale our model through digital innovation. Our digital ecosystem brings life-changing educational resources to any school, anywhere, reaching more students, teachers, and parents than ever before.

Why eMsingi Exists

Addressing critical gaps in Kenya’s education system through innovation

Beyond Textbooks

Many schools lack consistent guidance & psychosocial support. Most teachers aren’t trained to spot or support mental-health needs, and parents want to help but don’t know how.

Teachers Need Better Tools

The Competency-Based Curriculum asks teachers to deliver digital, inclusive lessons but many lack training, materials, or reliable ed-tech. Great ideas often never reach the classroom.

Life Skills Deficit

Skills like problem-solving, teamwork, and resilience aren’t consistently taught. Students learn to pass exams but struggle with real-world decisions, work readiness, and citizenship.

What drives us forward
